The competition brief required the applicants to design a storage facility with public access for the “Lucian Blaga” Cluj University Central Library.
Set in an independent building, the new volume had to be linked to the existing library, functioning as its book storage, but also on its own, and include a small conference space, and a public information center on the ground floor. Careful consideration was required for the issue of the juxtaposition of book storage and reading spaces. The competition site is situated in a prestigious historic quarter of Cluj, surrounded by grade B architectural monuments.
Our solution is a direct and rational response to the proposed problem, employing the idea of stacking, as a means of obtaining density with the most minimal of means and resources. The proposed volume fits into the existing urban logic of its context.
